Exterior painting completed - finally!

I know it's been a few days since I posted but I have been busy each evening - painting. And painting.  And painting. Painting the trims for the house.  Painting rims for the verandah posts.  Painting windows.  The house and porch have had four or five coats of paint, each varying in shade.  Now finally - for good or bad - it will stay the way it is: lighter than before and even some green added to meld it more with the rest of the colour scheme. Here it is with the shingles added and before I did the final coat of lighter paint.

The shingle colour is based on the khaki green of the sunflower wallpaper inside, but darker.  I mixed it starting with Ceramcoat Dark Forest Green, added some golden yellow, citrus yellow, a touch of burnt umber and a tiny bit of black and even some metallic copper.  The resulting colour does somewhat remind me of rather unpleasant things in some lights :) but it looks good, goes well with the wallpaper, and could justly be called bronze green.  It even has the merest hint of a metallic shimmer in some lights.  Only a suggestion though, and it gives it some life.  Here it is with the shingles painted and the lighter colour on the house.

Looking at the colour for the mullions, I mixed Terra Cotta with burnt umber and a tiny bit of black and really like the result.  The windows had to have one side removed and two windows joined together to make double panes, then have several coats of paint.  The exterior frames had the terra cotta brown on the mullions and light ivory on the frames, the interior are done in light ivory.  Here's a photo of one of the exterior windows just sitting in place, and it also shows the groove for the wires which has been made down the outside of the cladding ready to run the wires down behind the chimney.

The trim for the porch was fiddly to put together but everything was provided to make it as easy and accurate as possible.  A piece of flat wood went between the two railings, and the posts were spaced using blocks as spacers.  So with care and patience it worked well.

So now the porch trims are done: the railings assembled and painted, the post trims assembled and painted.  The exterior is painted, the ceilings are painted and have their lights installed.

Now the next part is to wallpaper the interior - at last!

  1. It's a lot of work for such a tiny little thing isn't it, but I'm sure it's going to look fab when you've finished.

    1. Yes Norma it's a lot of work, but then that's the pleasure isn't it? It would be so boring if it just took a few hours to make one of these, the challenge is what makes it interesting - and they are still so much quicker than 1:12th scale. Thanks for looking and commenting!
